A house fire in Shelby, North Carolina, led to a homicide investigation after firefighters discovered 54-year-old Bernice Hosch dead inside the burning residence. Jordan O’Neil Hosch, 33, has now been charged with first-degree murder, placing him at the center of an investigation that began with an emergency call on Friday, November 6.
The incident happened at a home on Gibson Road in Cleveland County. Firefighters were sent to the property after a fire alarm prompted an emergency response. Deputies from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office also arrived as crews began dealing with the fire.

Inside the home, firefighters encountered an active fire in the kitchen. They also found Bernice, who had suffered injuries that investigators described as consistent with an apparent assault. The discovery raised immediate concerns that the incident involved more than an ordinary residential fire.
While firefighters worked to contain the flames, deputies began investigating the circumstances surrounding Bernice’s death. The case was subsequently treated as a homicide, shifting the focus from the kitchen fire to the events that had taken place inside the residence.
Investigators later charged Jordan O’Neil Hosch with first-degree murder. According to jail records, he was arrested Saturday, November 7, one day after the emergency response at the Gibson Road property. He is currently being held without bond.
The murder charge is not the first time Jordan has appeared in arrest records this year. Records show that he was previously arrested on May 15, 2026. That case included charges involving possession of more than one-half ounce but less than one-and-one-half ounces of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and felony possession of a Schedule I controlled substance.
However, authorities have not publicly explained what led to the deadly incident or what happened inside the home before firefighters arrived. Investigators have also not disclosed whether the fire was connected to the alleged assault or how it started.
Another detail that remains unclear is the relationship between Jordan and Bernice. The two share the same last name, but authorities have not publicly confirmed whether they are relatives.
For now, Jordan remains in custody without bond as investigators continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding Bernice’s death. The case began with a fire alarm but has developed into a first-degree murder investigation, with several important questions still unanswered.
The fatal incident occurred in Shelby, the county seat of Cleveland County in western North Carolina, southwest of Charlotte. Authorities have not released further details about a possible motive or the events that led to the woman’s death.
