A vehicle went off the Pennsylvania Turnpike, struck a bridge abutment and caught fire Wednesday afternoon in Hempfield Township, killing two young men identified as 23-year-old Ashton Steedle and 20-year-old Brody Kimmel.

The deadly crash happened around 4:51 p.m. on Interstate 76 in Westmoreland County. The vehicle reportedly left the roadway, traveled down a hillside and struck the bridge structure near Route 136 and Greensburg Road. The impact was followed by a fire that left the vehicle badly damaged.

The first emergency call came from a passing motorist who saw the wreck and flames. The driver alerted dispatchers, bringing firefighters and other emergency personnel to the scene.

After firefighters extinguished the blaze, they discovered two people dead inside the vehicle. The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office later identified them as Ashton Steedle, 23, of Rostraver Township, and Brody Kimmel, 20, of West Newton.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Authorities have not explained what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway or why the driver lost control. They have also not announced whether any other vehicles were involved.

The crash has also brought attention to the difficult circumstances in which the two young men lost their lives. At 23 and 20, Steedle and Kimmel were still very young. Their families now have to deal with the sudden loss of two loved ones whose lives ended in a matter of moments.

The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office has said the cause and manner of death are still pending. State police have not announced any charges, and investigators have yet to identify a confirmed factor responsible for the crash.

Pennsylvania State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help investigators to contact the New Stanton station at 724-755-9463.

As investigators work to establish the full circumstances, two families are left mourning Ashton Steedle and Brody Kimmel. What began as an ordinary Wednesday afternoon ended in a tragedy that claimed two young lives and left their loved ones with an absence that cannot easily be explained.
