A Thursday afternoon drive ended in tragedy for 34-year-old Megan L. Kilpatrick of Wing, Alabama, after her SUV left the roadway, struck a mailbox and overturned in Covington County. Kilpatrick was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. The fatal wreck happened around 1:55 p.m. on November 5, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Kilpatrick was driving a 2003 Cadillac Escalade along Covington County Road 4 when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway. The SUV struck a mailbox before overturning. The crash happened near Barton Road, about four miles east of Wing, an unincorporated community in southern Covington County.
Authorities said Kilpatrick was not wearing a seat belt when the crash happened. She was ejected from the SUV as it overturned, leaving her with fatal injuries. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear. Authorities have not explained what caused Kilpatrick to lose control of the Escalade or why the vehicle left the roadway. No other vehicles were reported as being involved in the incident.
The crash happened in a rural part of Covington County, near the Conecuh National Forest. The area is known for its wooded surroundings and stretches of quiet country roads, where drivers can travel some distance between homes and other buildings.
Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division are handling the investigation. Officials have not released further information about the events leading up to the crash.
