A 23-second moment of silence has taken on a painful meaning for the hockey community in Petawawa, Ontario, following the death of Brody Rose, a young player who wore that number on his U18 Rep jersey.
Rose died over the weekend after suffering injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle Thursday night. His passing has brought together hockey players, coaches, families and local residents, many of whom have shared messages remembering him and offering support to those closest to him.

Brody played for the U18 Rep team under the Greater Petawawa Minor Hockey Association. Although he belonged to that particular team, the grief following his death has spread across several age groups and neighboring hockey communities.
The Greater Petawawa Minor Hockey Association described him as a remarkable young man and an outstanding player. Its tribute reflected the loss felt by people who knew him through the sport and those who had the opportunity to share the rink with him.
The association also made changes to its game schedule following his death. The U18 Rep game and the U18 B3 game were rescheduled as members of the hockey community took time to mourn. At three other home games, 23-second moments of silence were planned to honor the young player and the number he wore.
The remembrance extended beyond Petawawa. The Barry’s Bay Minor Hockey Association held a 23-second moment of silence during its home games Sunday. The gesture was accompanied by a message expressing love and support for Brody’s family and teammates.
Minor hockey organizations from Eganville, Renfrew and Barry’s Bay also joined others in sharing condolences. Their messages showed how news of his death had reached different parts of the Ottawa Valley, bringing together people connected through the sport.
The Petawawa Patriots U15 Rep B community also shared in the grief, while the Greater Petawawa association’s tributes reflected the wider impact of losing a member of its hockey family. Brody’s teammates and fellow players were among those left to cope with the loss.
Away from the rink, Hyska’s Your Independent Grocer also paid tribute to Brody. He worked at the store, where he was remembered as an incredible young man who greeted people with a big hello and an even bigger smile.
The store’s message expressed heartbreak over his death and offered condolences to his family and friends. Its tribute provided another glimpse into the relationships Brody had built outside hockey and the people who would miss seeing him in their everyday lives.
For those who knew him, the 23-second moments of silence carry a personal meaning. They represent a young teammate, a friend and a familiar face whose place in the community cannot simply be filled by another player.
As the days go by, the Petawawa hockey community will continue to remember Brody through the people he played alongside, the teams that honored him and the memories shared by those who knew him.
His No. 23 jersey has become a symbol of remembrance for a community mourning one of its own. The thoughts of teammates, coaches, coworkers and friends remain with his family during this difficult time.
Rest easy, Brody Rose. Forever No. 23.
