The Licking, Missouri, community is mourning the loss of Penelope Mya Huff, a 15-year-old high school student whose achievements in sports, school competitions, and art had already made her a familiar and admired face in her hometown. Penelope died on November 1, 2026, leaving her family, classmates, teammates, and coaches struggling to come to terms with her sudden passing.
Born on August 2, 2011, Penelope was the daughter of John Huff and Camerin (Heithold) Fester. She grew up in Licking and Rolla, Missouri, where she developed close relationships with family members, friends, and people who watched her grow into a talented young student-athlete.

At Licking High School, Penelope was known for her commitment to volleyball. Her performances on the court earned her First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District honors during both her freshman and sophomore seasons. She also received the Frisco League Most Valuable Player award during her sophomore year, an achievement that reflected the impact she had on her team.
Her contributions helped Licking High School secure two district championships and two conference tournament championships in 2025 and 2026. She also competed outside school through Club Phoenix, where she continued developing her volleyball skills and participating in tournaments.
Volleyball was not the only sport in which Penelope excelled. She also made her mark in track and field. During junior high school, she won a state championship in the 400-meter race and set a school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.35 seconds.
Her success continued during her freshman year. She claimed four individual district track titles, qualified for three events at the state track meet, and earned All-District recognition in basketball. For a young athlete still finding her way through high school, those accomplishments reflected an impressive level of dedication and ability.
Away from sports, Penelope had a creative side. She was a gifted artist whose work received recognition at Frisco League art competitions. Drawing and creating artwork were among the activities she enjoyed, giving her another way to express herself beyond the athletic competitions that occupied much of her school life.
Her Christian faith was also an important part of her life. Penelope professed her faith in God and participated in Licking High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Above her awards and sporting achievements, she treasured her family, friends, teammates, and coaches.
Penelope leaves behind her parents, John and Camerin; her stepfather, Jacob Fester; her brothers, Parker Huff and Jett Fester; her grandparents; extended family members; and many other loved ones who will miss her dearly.
Funeral arrangements have been announced for Saturday, November 7, at Assembly of God Church, 205 Highway 63, in Licking. Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Pastor David Jett will officiate. Burial is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. at Licking Cemetery, 318 N. Main Street.
Those wishing to honor Penelope’s memory may make memorial contributions to the Licking High School Booster Club or Licking Cemetery.
Her death has left a painful loss for a community that had watched her accomplish so much at such a young age. For her family and those who knew her, Penelope was more than an award-winning athlete. She was a daughter, sister, friend, student, and teammate whose life touched many people.
At just 15, she had already achieved things many young athletes spend years working toward. Her family, friends, and teammates now face the difficult task of moving forward without her, holding on to the memories of a young girl whose accomplishments and love for those around her meant so much.
