A motorcycle collision at a Sangerfield intersection claimed the life of 20-year-old Evan Downen of Oriskany Falls, New York, after a passenger vehicle struck his motorcycle Wednesday afternoon. Downen was rushed to a Syracuse hospital by air ambulance, but he died later that evening from his injuries.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred at approximately 1:10 p.m. on November 4, 2026, at the intersection of State Route 20 and Madison Street in the Town of Sangerfield.

According to the initial account, Downen was traveling westbound on his motorcycle when a passenger vehicle entered his path. The vehicle was driven by 68-year-old Kenneth Northrop of Waterville, who was attempting to cross the highway toward Newberry Road.
The collision sent Downen off his motorcycle. He suffered life-threatening injuries in the impact, prompting an emergency response from local first responders.
Mercy Flight transported him by air to SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where medical professionals worked to treat his injuries. Despite those efforts, Downen could not be saved and died later that evening.
The crash brought a sudden end to the life of a 20-year-old whose future still lay ahead of him. For his family, friends and others close to him, the news of his death means facing a loss that came without warning.
Northrop, who was identified by authorities as the driver of the passenger vehicle, was 68 and lived in Waterville. The sheriff’s office’s account placed the collision at the crossing where State Route 20 meets Madison Street, as the vehicle attempted to reach Newberry Road.
The crash also highlights the danger that can arise when vehicles and motorcycles meet at highway intersections. In this case, the impact left Downen with injuries so severe that he had to be flown to a major medical center.
But beyond the crash details, the loss comes down to a young life that ended at just 20. Evan Downen did not survive the injuries he suffered that afternoon, leaving his loved ones to mourn someone who should have had many more years ahead of him.
