The search for answers in the deadly shooting at a youth football championship game in Madison, Illinois, has taken a new turn after investigators released photographs of a man they want to identify and question. The shooting claimed the life of 64-year-old Steve A. Smith and left three other adults injured. Authorities are now asking the public to help them locate the man shown in the newly released pictures.

The gunfire erupted Sunday night, November 1, 2026, at Madison Senior High School, where families and spectators had gathered to watch a youth football league championship game. What was supposed to be an ordinary night of football ended in tragedy when shots rang out around 9:49 p.m.

Smith, who was from St. Charles, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other adults suffered gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospitals in the St. Louis area. Their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening, and all three were listed in stable condition.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is leading the investigation with assistance from the Madison Police Department and the FBI’s Springfield office. Investigators have been reviewing photographs and video recordings submitted by members of the public as they work to establish what happened that night.

After examining the available images and recordings, investigators identified a man they believe could have information relevant to the case. Authorities released his photographs on Thursday, November 5, and asked anyone who recognizes him or knows where he might be to come forward.

Police have been careful to explain that the man has not been identified as a suspect. Investigators simply want to speak with him as part of their efforts to understand the events surrounding the shooting. His appearance in the photographs does not establish that he committed a crime or had any role in Smith’s death.

Anyone who recognizes the man or has information that could help investigators is asked to contact the Major Case Squad at 618-709-7750. Information can also be shared anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-866-371-8477. Tips submitted through the official program may qualify for a reward under its guidelines.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are continuing to examine evidence and follow up on information from the public. For Smith’s family and the three injured victims, the search for answers continues after a night that turned a youth football championship into a deadly shooting. Investigators are hoping someone will recognize the man in the photographs and help move the case forward.
