A 20-year-old driver is facing a reckless driving charge after a collision claimed the life of 76-year-old motorcyclist Jon W. Persons in James City County, Virginia. The crash happened Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle turned across the motorcycle’s path at an intersection, leaving the older rider with fatal injuries.

The James City County Police Department said the collision occurred at approximately 1:43 p.m. on November 4 at Centerville Road and Jolly Pond Road. Persons was traveling in the 6000 block of Centerville Road when a vehicle coming from the opposite direction attempted to turn onto Jolly Pond Road.

Investigators said the vehicle crossed in front of Persons as it made the turn, resulting in a collision with his motorcycle. The impact left the 76-year-old with serious injuries, and emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital for treatment.

Despite receiving medical attention, Persons did not survive. He later died from the injuries sustained in the crash, turning the incident into a fatal motorcycle collision.

Police identified the driver as Dev’ion N. Williams, 20, of the 100 block of Lafayette Boulevard. The department’s Crash Team subsequently charged him with reckless driving in connection with the incident.

The charge follows an investigation into how the collision happened and the vehicle’s movement across the path of the approaching motorcycle. Police identified the turn onto Jolly Pond Road as the movement that brought the two vehicles into collision.

The death of Persons has left the focus of the incident on both the fatal consequences of the crash and the charge brought against the surviving driver. At 76, Persons lost his life after what began as an ordinary afternoon journey through James City County.

The case also highlights the risks motorcyclists face when vehicles turn across their path. Even a brief lapse in judgment at an intersection can have devastating consequences, particularly when a motorcycle is directly in the path of an approaching vehicle.

For now, the confirmed details remain that Jon W. Persons died from his injuries on November 4, 2026, and Dev’ion N. Williams was charged with reckless driving. The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Centerville Road and Jolly Pond Road in James City County, Virginia.
