Six people were killed and several others injured after a fast-moving fire tore through a two-story home in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday, November 5. The deadly blaze broke out shortly before 1:40 a.m. at 653 58th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, leaving a residential building badly damaged and families facing an unimaginable loss.

Firefighters arriving at the scene found flames spreading through multiple floors of the building. The fire quickly grew into a three-alarm emergency, with enormous flames shooting from the windows as thick black smoke covered the surrounding streets. Video recorded in the neighborhood showed the intensity of the blaze as firefighters rushed to contain it.

More than 200 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene. The operation involved approximately 231 fire and emergency medical personnel. The flames also spread to a neighboring home, raising concerns that the fire could damage other buildings along the residential block.

Four people were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others, who had suffered critical injuries, later died after being taken to a hospital. All six victims were adults. Their names and ages had not been publicly released as authorities worked to establish their identities.

Several other people were injured during the incident. Updated reports placed the number of injured at nine, including four civilians, three firefighters and two police officers. The injuries ranged from minor to serious but non-life-threatening conditions. Firefighters also rescued four people from the burning building, including two residents who were trapped behind window bars.

The FDNY requested a hazardous-materials response after lithium-ion batteries were discovered inside the residence. Their presence immediately became an important part of the investigation, but officials have not established that the batteries caused the fire. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the blaze before reaching any conclusions.

Fire officials believe the fire may have started on the second floor before spreading through the building. The intense heat and damage also affected the structure’s interior, with reports indicating that part of the staircase collapsed during the emergency. Firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading further into neighboring homes.

The American Red Cross was called to help residents displaced by the fire, while the New York City Department of Buildings responded to assess the damage. Several residents needed temporary accommodation after the destruction left their homes unsafe.

The fire took approximately three hours to bring under control. Firefighters continued working around the property after the main blaze was extinguished, checking for remaining hot spots and making sure the flames would not spread again.

The New York City Fire Department’s fire marshals are investigating what caused the deadly incident. The presence of lithium-ion batteries remains part of that investigation, but no official cause has been established. The tragedy has left six adults dead and several others injured, while families and residents of the Sunset Park community await further answers.
